How I started my startup that builds drones.

The story

In 2021, I set out to build a fixed-wing surveillance UAV as proof of concept for an autonomous fixed-wing UAV with internet datalink. One of the biggest challenges I faced was the lack of specialised equipment and huge knowledge gaps.

During the project, my teammates, Babtunde Oladipupo and Oluwajuwon Folorunso, and I, had to embark on multiple side projects in designing and building tools such as making custom sized drill bits, hot wire styrofoam cutter, etc. While these afforded us the opportunity to broaden our knowledge, it speaks volumes about why it is somewhat uncommon to see other young individuals build advanced systems that tackle local problems snd compete globally.

As I studied, took certification courses and widened my network, I realised that I had touched a fundamental problem in the African space - the problem of opportunity. I then set out to maximise what I had learned in the drone space to build drone-based solutions as well as to create a hub that enables researchers to build innovative solutions as well.

This is the vision and story behind Aerohub.

What do we do?

Currently based in Akure, Nigeria, Aerohub offers the following services:

  • Consultancy to academic researchers in the drone space, in design, building, and deployment.
  • Custom design and building of drones.
  • Training courses in drone design and development.
